Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI), Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) is an scientific research institution under the Russian academy of Sciences responsible for the oceanographic studies of pacific ocean.

History and Development:

Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI), Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) was established in 1973. The founder of the institute was great academician Victor I.II'ichev. POI FEB RAS is located at:

Organizational Structure:

POI FEB RAS is under the control of Department of Earth Science, RAS and Department of the Information Technologies & Computer Systems, RAS. Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI), Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) is headed by the director V. A. Akulichev. About 600 employees are engaged in various works in this institute. Among these, 450 are scientific personnels.

The main themes of research are: hydrophysical, hydrochemical and hydrobiological study of of water masses of Pacific Ocean along with the mutual interaction of hydrosphere with lithosphere and atmosphere, the marine ecosystem etc.

Some of the projects handled by POI FEB RAS are:

Geochemistry of Modern Sedimentation and Ore-Formation in the Areas of De-Fluidization of Sedimentary Basins in the Active Continental Margin. Experimental Studies of Mechanisms for Transforming the Energy of the Laser Radiation into the Sound at the Optical Break-Down in the Liquid Investigation of Variability of Hydrophysical Characteristics of the Waters in the Pacific Island Arcs of the Far Eastern Seas Quantum Chaos in Atomic Optics. Geochemistry of Volcanogenic Rocks of the Sea of Japan and Okhotsk Sea.

Marine exploration has always been a neglected area of geophysical studies. Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI), Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) is thus holds a very important place in Russian scientific development.
