Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM), Cameroon

Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM), Cameroon, presently headed by Dr. Hell Victor Joseph is the premier Organization in Cameroon, entitled to conduct all geological and mining explorations. In 2002, IRGM had organized the ICGP-470 Launching Field Conference. The Head of Research at the Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM), Cameroon, is Dr. Ngako Vincent.

The Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM), Cameroon is involved in a program organized by the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science(JSPS). The program is known as “Cameroon Volcanic Line — East African Rift Valley Volcanoes and the Underlying Mantle” (CVLEARVVUM). The program aims at providing training to research students and scientists from African and Asian countries.

Southern part of Cameroon can geologically be divided into 3 units, which are dealt by the Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM), Cameroon. The units are:

  • Neoproterozoic Yaoundé “series” forming the southernmost part of the Pan-African belt thrust onto the Ntem complex.
  • Archean Ntem complex marking the northern edge of the Congo craton
  • Paleoproterozoic Nyong “series” and its extension reworked by the Pan-African belt

The Institute for Geological and Mining Research (IRGM) in Cameroon carries out the following activities:

  • Conducting geological exploration programs
  • Mining the mineral ore deposits
  • Mechanized drilling works
  • Preventing exploitation of mines and quarries
